Networking Theory
Networking theory is all the definitions of networking and how they all fit in to make the process of networking work as fluently as possible. So the first definition most people want to know is what is networking. Networking is two or more nodes that are connected using some type of physical medium exchanging information using a common networking protocol.
Networking
In this unit we learned exactly how networking works. There are many benefits of networking. One, you can access more information online. Two, you can share peripherals. Three, You can share applications. Four networking can be portable so can use it when ever you want. Five, the cost are being reduce due to its increase. All these are useful but to access a network you need 10 basic things. These include Cables, Networking Interface Card, Network Switches, Routers, Firewalls, Servers, Storage, Desktop and Notebook computer, Tape backup Units and Uninterrupted power supply, and Network software. If you have access to all ten of these things, then you can easily access a network. In this unit we learned that data can travel in simplex, which is one way, it can travel in Duplex, which is two way (simultaneous), and or Half-Duplex, which is two way (one at a time). We also learned that the bits of data also travels. In serial the data travels one bit at a time. In parallel the data is traveled more than one bit at a time. Parallel or serial depend on amount and size of your data.
Internet vs Intranet
When it comes to internet and intranet, not many people knows the difference between the two. In this unit we learned the difference. Intranet is a (private WAN) private computer network. Internet is a (public WAN) worldwide, publicly accessible networks of interconnected computer networks. Another is the Extranets (private WAN with secured special access) which can be viewed as part of a company's Internet that is extended to users outside the company.
Network Connectivity Devices
When it comes to network connectivity devices there are three things that come to mind, NIC, Switches and Hubs and Router. A NIC is a network interface card or can be thought as the network adapter. A network switch is hardware device that joins multiple computers together within one Local Area Network. Router are WAN devices used to connect to connect networks together into intranets, Extranets and the Internet. Router use IP protocols to address all the nodes on the network . All these are key when it comes to the building and functioning of the network.
