Nanotechnology
For my final presentation for computer science, I decided to do nanotechnology. Nanotech is maneuvering of matter on very small
scale. This scale is usually at the atomic and
molecular level. Any nanotechnology must be a manipulation of
matter that has on dimension that is between 1 to 100 nanometre. This was a
specification created by the National Nanotechnology Initiative. One nanometre is one billionth of a meter. To make it more relatable, 1 nanometer is
1/80000 of the diameter of a human hair. What makes nanotechnology unique is the size of
the technology that its developed from Since nanotechnology can be used in almost any
industry (medical, electrical etc) different governments have invested billions
of dollar in order to produce a product that would give them an advantage in their
leading industry. USA has invested 3.7 billion dollars, following
them in the European Union with 12. Billion and finally, Japan with 750
million. Just goes to show that this area in technology
is becoming more and more popular. People that work on nanotechnology run into many
problems due to the size challenges of different parts. One has to be able to come with an alternative
way to create a product that gives the results just as good if not better.
Nanotechnology Example Today:
There are many examples in this emerging technology. Nanoparticles of zinc oxide in sunscreen are used to make cream smooth and transparent and to reflect UV radiation. Self cleaning windows are coated with a material that produces a chemical reaction when the sun shines on it removing any dirt present. When rain falls on it, except of forming droplets, it spreads the water out evenly and the water drips off. The thickness of this material is controlled at a nano scale level. To create stain repellent fabrics, rolls of cotton are immersed in liquids which contain trillion nanotech fabrics. Cotton gets dried and the fabric is permanently attached to the cotton. Tennis balls are coated in a nanosized material which make a molecular barrier. This then traps air making the balls bounce. Clothing covered in a thin layer of zinc oxide to better protect against UV radiation. The nanoparticles help deflect UV radiation and better protect. Some clothes have hair like structures that act as nanoparticles and help deflect liquids. This makes the clothing stain free. Scratch resistant coating is made by coating scratch resistant surface with aluminum silicate nanoparticles. This increases the ability to resist a scratch or a chip. Antimicrobial bandages are made to better improve the process of manufacturing of bandages. The tiny silver ions block/prevent respiration of microbes, providing a germ free bandage.
Nanotechnology Uses Future:
Nanotechnology can be used to create smaller circuits used in computer. This will allow the computer to work at a much faster speed. New nano materials can be used to increase the computer lifespan. Laptops will have a more lifespan. Nanometer sized solar cells can be used in order to provide most of the energy needed to run various devices. Nanotechnology will increase the efficiency of fuel cells and batteries. Biological nanosensors are being developed in order develop faster and more accurate diagnostics. It can be used to improve manufacturing methods. It can be used to purify water. Improving energy systems and enhancing them. Making medicine and it can be used in gene therapy to get rid of mutation causing genes.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, nanotechnology is cool and unique way to express technology on a small scale. It has many benefits due to its size (less materials, fewer resources etc). There are many applications from a variety of industries that can use nanotechnology to better enhance their performance in what ever they develop/manufacture. Nanotechnology is one of those topics that comes into many peoples’ minds but know one truly knows about it. Hope you consider this a helpful tip/idea on nanotechnology. Get a little more engaged when it comes to nanotechnology because it truly is a remarkable area in technology.
