Home Networking
Below this is a diagram of a simple home network with 5 desktop and 3 wireless computers sharing a laser printer, scanner, and high speed cable or DSL modem to the Internet, there is also a media server connected to an HDTV. This diagram clearly shows how a regular home network should be connected. The DSL modem is used to connect to the internet using a fiber optic cable. The router is coonnected to the DSL modem using an ethernet cable. Connected to the router are the 3 wireless laptops/computers. The switch is connected to the the router using an ethernet cable. Connected to the switch are many other devices. Firstly, there are the 5 desktop PC connected to the switch using ethernet ports. Then there is the scanner, media serever and the printer. The media serever is connected to the switch using an ethernet port. Since the printer and the scanner have to be connected to through a USB port, and since not many switches have more then 1 USB ports, I used an ethernet converter to connect the scanner to my switch. The HDTV is connected to the media server using an HDMI cable. This diagram which I created clearly demonstrates how a normal home network works and how it should be connected in order for it to work. Some things that you have to keep in mind when creating a home network is how many wires you are going to buy. You also have to keep in mind, how many ports your switch or router has. This is important because if you don't have enough, then not all the PC and or devices are going to be able to connect to the home network.
